Next morning

8:30 AM

"Uugghhhh…" Sonic groaned. He put his hand on his tummy. "God…"

"Sonic, what is it?" Amy asked.

"I think I'm…gonna…!"

Amy quickly wrapped one arm around him and guided him to the bathroom, where he proceeded to empty his stomach of the breakfast Amy had made for him that morning. Amy stood by patiently, supporting him from behind. Sonic paused, wheezing for a good measure, then continued to throw up into the toilet. Amy rubbed his back, between his two back quills, careful to avoid jostling his pointy tail. "Take it easy…"
Her voice seemed to make him feel better, and soon he crawled backwards, flushing the toilet. He remained in a pose remiscient of a cobra position, however his knees were supporting his body and he kept his head hanging down. Sweat was rolling down the sides of his face, and the hedgehog was breathing heavily.  He stayed like this for 20 minutes, and finally his stomach calmed down, as well as his breathing. Amy stopped rubbing him and said, "Sonic, you nee to go lie down for awhile. That'll make you feel better."

Sonic's head quills bobbed forward, letting Amy know that he agreed. He made a move to stand up, and Amy was there to help him get up. She helped him out of the bathroom and into his room, which Vector and the others had cleaned up. After he got in bed, Amy felt his head. Oddly, it was quite warm. She and Tails had researched and read that pregnant women get headaches, but this…this was more like a fever. She looked at Sonic; he had his eyes three-fourths of the way closed and was staring up at the ceiling. His cheeks were tinted slightly pink, and his breathing was getting a bit heavier again.

Worried, Amy went and got a wet towel and a thermometer. Placing the towel on his head and the thermometer in his mouth, she waited for several seconds before the beeper on the thermometer went of. She took it out and read it: "104.8…My goodness…! Sonic. Sonic, can you hear me?"
Between his almost closed eyelids, Amy could see a sliver of green slide and focus on her.  He gave a slight nod of his head, but didn't say anything. Luckily, at that moment, Tails walked in. Amy looked over at him, not wanting to leave Sonic's side. "Tails." She whispered. "Get a phone. Call the doctors, he's burning up over here."

"Hmm. This is strange…he hasn't contracted anything…any signs or symptoms before he woke up this morning?" Dr. Griffith asked, staring at Sonic over his clipboard.

"No, everything was normal," Amy told him. "I mean, sure he had stomach pains last night, but that was it."

"Really, just that?" Dr. Griffith asked. He wrote something down. "Because if he just had stomach pains, it may be a sign that he's eating something that doesn't agree with the baby. If he eats the wrong foods, then he'll get stomach cramps from it. As for him throwing up this morning, that's normal. However," He looked at the sleeping blue hedgehog. "That fever isn't normal."

"He has to have some sort of cold, right?" Tails asked, holding a few library books to his chest; all of them were on teen pregnancy.

"Yes, but were could he have gotten it from overnight?" Amy asked.

"From the looks of it," Dr. Drummond began at Sonic's bedside, "He may have Influenza. The vomiting, fever…and he's getting chills over here, too."

"What?!" Amy and Tails nearly screamed.

"He'll need a shot for it. But this is strange," Dr. Drummond muttered. "It just struck him and nobody else…"

"Ryan, let's go retrieve the vaccine so he can take it," Dr. Griffith said. "We'll be back, Ms. Rose and Mr. Prower. Keep an eye on him..."

After they'd left, Amy and Tails sat worried, looking at Sonic.

"I can't believe this. How could he have possibly gotten the flu?" Tails asked. "He hasn't been around any sick people!"

"I'm confused as you are Tails. I mean, it was so sudden…"

"It's not…influenza…" came a weak call from the bed. Amy and Tails looked up at him. "Sonic?" Amy called softly.

The blue hedgehog lifted his head with difficulty and sat up. Amy went over to him and sat down next to him on the bed. He turned his head halfway in her direction.

"What were you saying, Sonic?" Amy asked, putting her hand on his back for support. Tails came and sat down on the bed as well as Sonic said, "I don't have a cold or the flu or anything." He paused for a moment, swaying slightly. Then he continued: "Call me crazy, but I think that's my kid doing this to me."

"What? What do you mean by that?" Tails asked.

"In my stomach, it feels like I swallowed a hot coal or something. It's burning up down there. And it's running up my body temperature and giving me this fever--" He shivered suddenly.

"--and chills." Tails murmured thoughtfully.

"Here, lie down." Amy said, helping him sit back. She put a hand on his stomach. Indeed she felt, to her shock, that the hedgehog's belly was extremely warm in comparison to the rest of his body (which was still generally warm, due to his high temperature). She lifted her hand and looked at Tails, who got up and did the same thing, putting his hands on his friend's stomach. After a few seconds, he looked up at Amy with a look of worry and concern that made him look much older than eight. He reached and picked up a stethoscope nearby, then put it on his ears and the other end to Sonic's tummy.

"Hear anything?" Sonic panted faintly, his chest moving up and down a bit faster than normal. His cheeks were getting redder. Tails looked at him, listening closely, then he smiled and nodded. "I can hear it's heartbeat. It sounds a lot stronger!"

Sonic and Amy breathed sighs of relief. "Thank goodness!" Amy said. "The baby's all right, but…I'm still wondering as to how it's causing your stomach to incubate like that. Tails, are sure that can't be a side affect?"

"Positive, I read through all of these this morning," Tails said. He opened one book and flipped through it, scanning the pages closely. "I mean, the closes thing to it is  what Dr. Griffith told us; he's had nausea and vomiting, which signifies that he's eaten something not good fore him, but I don't see anything about your stomach getting warm."

"That's strange…he's getting symptoms that aren't even documented…" Amy said, staring thoughtfully at Sonic. "Do you think it's because…he's a boy?"

"I thought about that. But as far as pregnancy symptoms go with him, he's been fine.
"No!" Tails closed the book with a snap. "I'm getting the feeling that we're missing something…"

Puzzled, Amy asked, "Missing something? Huh?"

"I mean, he's been on good terms with this whole pregnancy thing since we found out," Tails said. He got up and started pacing. "He's been healthy, been eating well (as far as I know), and has been having common symptoms--right?" He asked Amy, who nodded. "Right."

"What I'm getting at is--I don't think…that kid he's carrying is normal." Tails told her. "To me, that's the only logical explanation as to why he's gotten sic k all of a sudden. His stomach is warm," He looked at Sonic. "What else could be causing that?"

Amy nodded slowly. "Okay, I see what you mean by that, but…I'm still confused as to what you meant that we're 'missing something'."

"As I think back," Tails started. He went over to a window and looked out. "Where did we--or namely, Chip find him?"

"In the Red Mountain Zone." Amy said, still not getting g where he was going.

"Didn't it ever occur to you why he was there in the first place?"

Amy paused, then realized she'd never thought about that fact.

"If I recall, He'd been missing for several days," Tails continued. "After he'd gone after Metal Sonic. And you told me he'd been knocked out and carried away. Right?"

"Right…" Amy said. "Then I tried to find you and your plane so we could go after them. But aside from the fact that you were asleep in it (Tails blushed and looked at the ground) -- it had no fuel in it. So we couldn't go after them."

"Them?" Tails raised an eyebrow. "So you mean you see where I'm going with this?"

"Ah--well, I said 'them' by force of habit, I guess. I meant him, as in Metal Sonic." Amy said.

"No, you were right at first. Didn't you tell me…" Tails nodded, seeing Amy's eyes widen with realization as she realized what he was saying, "…that--"

"--Dr. Eggman was there too! Oh, I forgot, I totally forgot about him!" Amy muttered furiously. She looked at Tails, who had exchanged his somewhat amused grin into a frown. "Do you think he--?"

"I do."
